Travel Edition - Donutology in KC
My road trip with Melissa would not be complete without a new donut blogging adventure.
A trip full of late nights, early mornings, and tripping into strangers, Kansas City is always full of fond memories with this girl.
We decided to try Donutology in Westport, KC.
The concept is pretty straightforward - you write down your order on a page that feels like a quiz. You choose your type of base donut, icing, toppings, and drizzles.
Sounds simple enough. BUT it's very easy to over do it and go crazy. I tried to pick things that sounded like they went together, like a chocolate cake donut with vanilla icing, Butterfinger crumbles, graham cracker crumbles, and chocolate drizzle. But alas, it was just too much going on. Not to mention that the icings weren't very good. Too goopy & thick for my liking.
As you can see, cereal plays a big role in the toppings department. I'm not too crazy about that.
The only donut I enjoyed at all was the Seasonal Special called "The Bee's Knees" - it is on the bottom right - and was a white cake donut with vanilla icing, Honey Nut Cheerios, and chocolate drizzle. The Cheerios were stale, but the white cake donut was definitely worlds better than the chocolate or the blueberry. The blueberry one was awful. I put vanilla icing and coconut on it and it was just no good.
The Shatto Milk they sell there in glass bottles was really good! We got coffee flavor and it was like a really light iced coffee. YUM. They also had Strawberry, Cotton Candy, & Chocolate Milk.
On the drive home, Melissa and I pondered our experiences at both Donutology and The Doughnut Lounge. We came to the conclusion that much like Strange Donuts here in STL, Donutology can be likened to the experimental college kid phase of your life. You make some pretty bad mistakes, you concoct some seriously weird donuts, and then you eventually go back to eating normal, tried & true donuts.
The Doughnut Lounge is like an adult version of Donutology. The Doughnut Lounge is when you're A-Okay getting in your pajamas on a Friday night and watching some Netflix.
So not to get too philosophical on you, but I'd go back to Donutology and attempt to make better creations. But more for the experimental fun of it. If I just want a delicious, fancier donut in KC, I'd definitely go to The Doughnut Lounge.
Oh, and here's a Fun Fact: Donutology sent a donut to SPACE! They have it displayed and a whole video of the journey. Very fun!

Toppings are mostly cereal or candies. I was happy to see coconut! |
