Pharaoh's Donuts - Downtown STL

Image
On our 1 year anniversary, Michael took me to Pharaoh's Donuts in Downtown STL. They were absolutely delicious! I got my two classic favorites, a glazed and a chocolate long john . The chocolate icing tasted like it had a lot of cocoa powder, which Michael and I agreed made it taste like a Hot Chocolate Long John. After 1 year of marriage, we still struggle to share donuts.  We got there around 11 and the selection was slim.. a few of these and some cake donuts.  There was a little table inside and a vending machine, but the interior needs some love. It seems like some of the best donut shops in St. Louis are the ones that put zero effort into their appearances. They apparently also sell Hot Dogs, too, according to their sign. Interesting. These are classic, well made donuts and all the reviews on other sites are great, so I'll definitely be back to try the Crumb Cake donut and Apple Fritters that people have raved about! And super extra bonus points for ta

Field's Foods has Donuts!

Image
Hey donut munchers. I apologize for the lack of donut blogging lately. Been real lazy, no excuses. But I've been really into COCONUT lately and had a Coconut Chocolate Twist donut and it was great! Has anyone been to Field's Foods in Lafayette area? I'm all for the local farmers and stuff, but it seems to me people just go there to pay extra money for regular foods. But the important thing is that their donuts are good and somewhat reasonably priced. My donut was 79 cents and Mike's sprinkly chocolate thing was cheaper. I know that muffin isn't a donut, but I forgot to move him, so there he is.

SUPER BIG CONGRATS TO VINCENT VAN DOUGHNUT!

Be proud, STL! We have the best doughnuts around! Vincent Van Doughnut won the Cooking Channel's Donut Showdown! Here is Feast's article on the win! I thought Clyde ran on chocolate icing...

O'Fashion Donuts - The Hill

Image
Wow I love these donuts. Elvis Presley posters line the windows. While the shop certainly isn't a marvel of organization or design,  this is a totally underrated donut shop on  The Hill,  very close to World's Fair Donuts. I like O'Fashion better.  We got a Chocolate Long John, Chocolate Iced Custard Filled, and Glazed. The woman behind the counter said Plain Glazed is their most popular and I see why.  The selection by 11am is bad, though. Nearly everything is sold out and I've been there once before with a similar situation, so get there before 10am. We got a coffee, milk, and 4 donuts for $3 and some change.  O'Fashion Donuts (314) 772-0398 5120 Southwest Ave  St Louis, MO 63110 Hours 5am-1pm DAILY

The Only Healthy "Donut" I've Found So Far

Unless you're allergic to peaches. Then not so healthy.

Vincent Van Doughnut @ Food Truck Friday & Straubs

Image
I've been trying to find Clyde the Van for a while now and finally saw via the Twitter   that they would be at Food Truck Friday in Tower Grove Park, so I high-tailed it over there and thankfully got there before they sold out. You can't dilly-dally if you want fancy doughnuts. I found Clyde! We got two cake doughnuts- a Salted Carmel Chocolate and French Toast. They are very large! I am more of a regular yeast doughnut kind of gal, but the cake dough was quite good. The French Toast was sticky with syrup and had crumbly bits on top. I loved the chocolate icing on the Salted Carmel. Oh, and the salt. I loved that too. This one is a great choice for sweet & salty fans. In the future, I'd probably stick with yeast doughnuts. I've been told VVD's yeast doughnuts are heavy yeast, which makes them fall kind of in the middle of a cake and yeast doughnut. Cakes are usually dry for me, especially if I don't have access to an enormous glass of milk. A few

Lubely's Bakery & Deli - My Wedding Donuts!

Image
I finally got pics from my wedding and am reminded what a HUGE HIT the donuts were! Perks: Way cheaper than cake Way tastier than cake No cake cutting No waiting to cut the cake- everyone just grabs one Sprinkles matched my rainbow theme (& could potentially match any theme!) You can choose a variety I chose Lubely's Bakery  primarily because they are used to weddings (they make wedding cakes). They are also very reasonably priced, classic, and delicious. I had a donut tasting, where I sampled the donuts like you would for cake. I chose Chocolate and Vanilla Iced French Crullers and Vanilla Iced Rainbow Sprinkle Cake donuts. I still wanted a sort of "cake topper", so I made a little wire display and ordered one Chocolate Long John and one Vanilla Long John to be decorated like a bride and groom. Extra happy with this choice. Lubely's has a full deli and seating area. They were so helpful during my wedding and didn't add an ounce of stress

From Dave @ Tony's Donuts

Image
Dave says, "Yum". Location 12218 McKelvey Rd, Maryland Heights, MO 63043 (314) 739-1388 Hours 5am-2pm Daily Last time I went to Tony's (a few years ago) I was pleasantly greeted with a huge selection of donuts. Tony's has quite a few loyal fans, but yelpers have complained about customer service- saying when the owner isn't there it goes way down.  I'll have to go undercover next time I go there and report back.

Congrats, STL

Three of our donut shops - The Donut Stop , Strange Donuts , and World's Fair Donuts - made it onto Grub Street's 101 Amazing American Doughnut Shops With Serious Street Cred . Just so happens I've enjoyed donuts from all of these spots, and recently Scientist McGee sent in this photo from World's Fair. He says their plain donut is the best for dunking.   Congrats to our donut shops and during your travels outside of STL, consult Grub Street's list for donut destinations! I also decided to make my own list: Most Interestingly Named Donut Shops on the List of Amazing Donut Shops: 1.     laV , Austin, TX 2.    Friske Orchards , Ellsworth, MI 3.    Fractured Prune , Ocean City, MD

Eddie's Southtown Donuts

Image
Hours 5am-noon Every Day 4701 S Kingshighway Blvd Prior to opening his own donut shop, Eddie began his career working at  Donut Drive-In ! This type of donut behavior is probably frowned upon by Donut Drive-In.  Anyway, we ordered the two customer favorites, a Chocolate Long John and a Boston Cream Filled, along with an Apple-Raspberry Filled Glazed, German Chocolate Cake, Powdered Chocolate Buttercream, and Blueberry Cake. The Powdered Chocolate Buttercream tastes like a donut and cupcake had a baby. I wasn't a huge fan, but I've read some raving reviews of it. My favorite was the Boston Cream Filled . I got there right before they closed, so as I've said with other donut shops, this one is for Morning People. They get mostly 4-5 stars on Yelp and posts are very positive about the friendly service and selection of donuts. I still think they should rate donut shops in sprinkles. Oh, and here's a GROUPON  to Eddies!

Hot glazed and Chocolate Long John @ STL Hills Donuts

Image
Last Sunday at 9ish AM we stopped by St. Louis Hills Donuts and got a Chocolate Long John, Vanilla French, Cinnamon Twist Glazed, Glazed, and Chocolate Cake with Cream/Frosting in the middle. The glazed, sadly, was gone before I took this photo and there is a good reason for that. It was warm and too perfect to photograph. The Long John was also warm still and is pictured with a bite missing. The Chocolate Cake was the least exciting, oddly enough.  Hot glazed was better than a hot krispy kreme, if that puts it into perspective. Best Chocolate Long John I've had in a while.

Vegan Donuts @ Strange Donuts

These still look like donuts, so that's a good start. Haven't tried one yet, but have heard good things.
