Scientist McGee @ Strange Donuts

Image
A few weeks ago I ran into a fellow donut lover at a bakery. Dennis (aka  Scientist McGee if you're into mixing drinks ) had read my blog and we posed for this very excellent photo together. Did I just become a donut celebrity? Anyway, he went to Strange Donuts and sent me these photos! Thanks, Dennis. 2 Gooey Butters is the way to go. "Brown butter donut, lemon/mint glaze, crushed pistachios, and Grana Padano (I've never heard of Grana Padano before... It tasted like a Parmesan cheese) - It was a tasty treat!" - Dennis

Strange Donuts - Maplewood

Image
In case you weren't one of the bajillion people standing in line for Strange Donut's grand opening , well that is just impossible. You were there. Think about it.  I've been slacking on blogging lately because I'm getting married this Saturday. But I haven't been slacking on the eating-donuts part. Just writing about them. We stood in the line Friday night and got a Red Velvet Cake, Gooey Butter, Pumpkin Spice, S'mores Campfire, Oreo, and Butterfinger. Strange faces for strange donuts. Manditory. Now I mean no disrespect, but I was concerned that all the hype about Strange Donuts would get my hopes too high and I'd be underwhelmed. I want to formally apologize for these thoughts, because they were wrong.  The Gooey Butter Donut is by far my favorite. This is a STL must-eat donut , if that's a thing. Eat this donut. These guys are a perfect example of using every means you have to make a business work. The marketing, social m

Vincent Van Doughnut

Food trucks are the thing now and STL has its first donut truck in the making- Vincent Van Doughnut. Currently the van, Clyde, is unmarked, so beware of friendly men that invite you into their donut van; there may be impostors afoot. Check out this  RFT article . Exciting donut news for my favorite city!

A Donut Public Service Announcement

Image
Maybe this donut was unruly, had a rebellious look in its eye. Maybe this donut lives on the wrong side of town, where plastic bags are the slums and luxurious boxes are only found in dreams. Or perhaps this donut is kind-hearted and would never hurt a fly. It started hanging around the wrong crowd and eventually wound up here: Forlorn, shmushed. We will never know what this donut did to deserve this.  It's vanilla icing is undoubtedly going to stick to the bag. Thank goodness it wasn't glazed and did not get all sticky and soggy. Or even worse, stacked with other frosted donuts! The barbarity! Let's show some love for our donuts. No little bags shoved in our purses, folks. This is improper donut etiquette .  To top it off, my coworker ate this donut with a spoon .

Doughssants at Nadoz are Evolving!

Image
When Nadoz premiered their Doughssant, I loved it. But that was before it had fully evolved. Now I really don't think I can live without it. Behold. Now they have Nutella, Raspberry, and Lemon filling. I recommend Nutella if you're a Nutella lover, obviously, but otherwise Raspberry was incredible. Check out my previous post for more on Nadoz Euro Cafe + Bakery.

Plaza Pastries and Donuts

Image
Tower Grove has a donut shop! It is sandwiched between South Grand and Kingshighway, and since it's not on a main road, it is easy to overlook. South Grand and Tower Grove Park are some of the greatest places in St. Louis. Sometimes tourist destinations like the nearby Botanical Gardens overshadow this area, but if you're visiting STL, make it a point to go here. Employee was super friendly and gave us complimentary donut holes while we debated. She recommended her favorite, the Buttermilk Donut Stick , which was delicious. Mike noted that it would be "the best donut to go with coffee" .  As I write this, I'm already wanting to go back. A good sign. We also got a Strawberry Iced and Chocolate Cake donut, both of which were tasty, homemade, and old fashioned.  Plaza Pastries and Donuts has been open for 4 years.    Their location and endearingly ancient signage  gave me low expectations, but they make some good donuts!  On Sunday by 11am they ha

Katie's Pizzeria - Clayton

Image
Yesterday I discovered that I can eat pizza and House Made Ricotta Donuts (with honey drizzle and raspberries) at the same place- Katie's. They're $7 , which is pricey for donuts, but then again, you're in Clayton and no one else seems to notice. They're hot and made-to-order. I could've used a few more berries, Katie, but I'll let it slide this time. I think 1 berry per donut should be protocol. Reasonable? Yes, I think so. Don't inhale! Beware of Powdered Sugar's primary attack! This isn't a pizza blog, so I won't go into detail on that, but check out their website. And if you feel like being ritzy, eating pizza, and then eating donuts, Katie's is small, comfortable, and has outdoor seating for the 2 days a year STL is temperate.  Maybe you could even sneak in some of your own berries. katiespizzacafe.com/menu.html Location: 6611 Clayton Rd, St Louis, MO 63117 Hours: Sunday- Thursday 11 am - 10 pm Friday,

The Donut Stop Inc.

Image
The Donut Stop's stop sign on Lemay Ferry is not regulation size, so you won't be ticketed if you pass through it. But you will miss out on some good donuts. Donut Stop is definitely the best shop in the Lemay area. If you're at South County Mall, it's only about 8 minutes away. Now I know Krispy Kreme is right across the street, but the drive is worth it. They have Fried Pies , a variety of Fritters (Apple, Blueberry, Cherry) ,  Cinnamon Globs , and much more. The staff was super friendly and said a lot of people want to take pictures, which I assume is because they've been featured in USA Today's Top Ten donut shops in the nation and are included in most STL donut articles.  They've been around for over 60 years and pioneered the donut hole back in the 80's, according to USA Today. Staff recommended their Custard Filled and Raspberry Jelly Donuts. Since I didn't have milk, these were perfect for me.  Cody loved his

Donut Burger at GCS Ballpark

Image
The GCS Gateway Grizzlies Ballpark in Sauget, IL advertises their Donut Burger over the loud speakers. It uses Krispy Kreme donuts cut in half for the bun.  Rita got one and was not pleased with the quality of the meat or the sogginess of her donut. Another friend got one later and it looked a bit more appealing, but he still stated, "I would've rather just had a regular burger." Rita is unimpressed.

Nadoz Euro Bakery + Café - Doissant

Image
Nadoz stepped up to the plate, STL. And I'm so glad they did. On a trip to New York, the owner tried the famous Cronut and fell in love. Nadoz now serves "Doissants", since Cronut is a patented term. Nadoz has locations near Grand Center and Brentwood . I used to go for their Eclairs when I felt like I'd earned a treat (new job, interview, drove through Grand Center) so I can 100% attest to their bakery quality. Pinkies out- doissants are classy. They are sugary, crunchy, and deliciously light.  Coronado Ballroom is gorgeous. Lunch and breakfast is all delicious and healthy and they serve breakfast all day. Way to go, Nadoz. www.nadozcafe.com Coronado Ballroom Location 3701 Lindell Blvd 314.446.6800 Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:30pm Saturday 8:00am-4:00om Sunday  Closed The Boulevard Location #12 The Boulevard St. Louis 314.726.3100 Monday-Thursday 7am - 8pm Friday 7am - 10pm Saturday 8am - 10pm Sunday 8am - 7pm

St. Louis Hills Donuts

Image
I used to live a whopping 1 block from St. Louis Hills Donuts and managed never to go there, primarily because it's a morning donut place . I woke up early for STL Hill's donuts because I've been told they're "the best" and that once sold out, they close. So even though the sign says they're open til noon, Sundays around 10:30 am, sometimes the donuts are just gone. In my opinion, if you're a donut shop and you consistently sell out of donuts, how about make more donuts? Maybe I'm crazy here. Action shot! Thanks, Matt! Clearly I went into this a smidge bitter. But the employees were friendly and various customers recommended the glazed. I will say, Glazed was my favorite. One customer was upset by the lack of donut holes.  Matt and I shared a Glazed, Vanilla Iced French Crueller, Chocolate Iced Cake, Yellow Cake with Chocolate Icing and Almonds, and Cheesecake Donut. Yeah, I bring my own Mason jar of milk. This is

NATIONAL DOUGHNUT DAY

Image
Happy National Doughnut Day, STL!!!! Party hard. Doughnut Responsibly. Chau-ing down on some donuts with Kevin Chau (bottom left). PBJ and Key Lime Pie Long Johns Big thanks to Strange Donuts for free donuts, Kuva coffee, and tunes. Fun stuff. They'll be opening in July, so stay tuned for that.

Breaking Donut News: The Cronut

Image
Donuts and croissants had a baby. It's the Cronut. In New York, Cronuts and knockoffs (doissants) are being sold on craigslist in a sort of pastry black market. Wondering who will be the first STL donut shop to give this a whirl. . . From Chicago: The Cronut Craze

Fenton Old Towne Donuts (Part 2)

Image
I happened to be in Fenton again on a Friday. At 7:50 pm there was a group waiting outside for the 8pm opening. I'm told this isn't typical, but I think it should be. These folks love Old Towne and highly recommended the Devils Food Glazed. We enjoyed it a lot and also tried the Devils Food with Chocolate Icing, Vanilla Cake, and Vanilla Cake with Sprinkles.  At 8pm, cake donuts are the only options. Luckily, they're delicious.

From Kelsey @ Lamar's in KC

Image
This is real donut love, people. I've discussed LaMar's Donuts before (see: Ray's Donuts) and Kelsey just sent this in. She had "a lot of donuts" that day and recalls the Chocolate Long Johns most fondly. She also enjoyed a  Red Velvet Cake   Donut  and Blueberry   Donut . LaMar's has many locations throughout the midwest-  Missouri  locations include Kansas City, Lee's Summit, & Blue Springs. Thanks, Kelsey!

From Renee @ Donut Drive-In

Image
"After reading your blog post about Donut Drive-In, Randy and I decided to drive-in to this late night hotspot. I got a good assortment of sweet treats but Randy stayed true to the almighty apple fritters (when after tasting his light and crispy donut, I immediately regretted not ordering one for myself). Cleo, the dog, was eyeing my donut the whole time, and after teasing her during this photo, we gave her a few dog treats. Which brings me to an idea...DOGGIE DONUTS! I think donuts filled with dog treats should be implemented at this little donut shack that is located in an area where many passers-by are accompanied by their loyal companions. I give these donuts 10 out of 10 sprinkles." -Renee Paradowski Thanks, Renee and Randy!

John Donut

Image
1618 S Broadway Saint Louis ,  MO   63104 Hours Mon-Wed    11 pm - 12 am Tue-Thu      12 am - 12 pm Thu-Fri        1 pm - 12 pm Friday at midnight, John Donut is a sitcom, complete with a laugh track of teenagers and fun Superman collectibles.  It's off the beaten path in an industrial area of Soulard. If you're not used to Soulard, it might look a little sketchy, but parking is right in front and I felt 100% safe. Though it was supposed to be spring in good old STL, it was cold and pouring.  Mike, Trey, and I were relieved to see plenty of seating and hot donuts being shoved onto the racks. Mike's favorite snack is cinnamon raisin bread with nutella, so when he saw a Chocolate Iced Cinnamon Raisin donut , did he have a choice? It was still hot. It is his favorite donut so far (ever) and that's a big deal. $6 for these and a milk Trey, not a fan of raisins, ordered one Chocolate and one  Vanilla Sprinkle donut . He preferred vanilla and I

Where Should I Eat Donuts This Weekend?

Dear Donut-Eaters, Of course I have a lengthy list of places I need to review, including John Donut St. Louis Hills Donuts Eddie's Southtown Donuts Donut Stop Tony's Donuts O'Fashion Donuts Inc. just to name a few. But I'm interested to know where YOUR favorite STL donut shops are located! Comment below! What's your favorite donut they make?

Donut Drive-In

Image
Donut Drive-In is seldom forgotten when STL's donut scene is discussed. And for good reason.  Sandwiched between tourist attractions like Ted Drewe's and Gooey Louie, Donut Drive-In is a Route-66 essential stop. Loyal patrons & South City residents have been super friendly to me. Once, when I forgot the cash only rule*, a nice gentlemen bought my donuts. And last night, while deliberating donut choices, the nice employee gave me a fresh Apple Fritter.  Despite my coaxing for variety, Mike and Randy each bought an  Apple Fritter.   I'm told there are 2 bakers and patrons have preferences on whose Fritters are better. I went on a Thursday night (9:30pm) and had a fresh one. Mike said it was, "like there's pie in my donut" and Randy mused that "the inside was airy" and it had "the right amount of crunch".  "I got everything I wanted from that," noted Randy.

Ray's Donuts

Image
I'm sick for the 4th time this season. Woe is me. But in transit to the doctor's office, I spot this: Grand Opening! Wahoo! Ray's Donuts has 2 location- Brentwood and Olive. The cashier tells me they want to open 2 more locations in Kirkwood and the Central West End.  The donuts are not baked in the store. They have a separate baking facility from which the donuts are delivered each morning around 4:30am.   I got an Old Fashioned Sour Cream, Maple Long John, Chocolate Iced Old Fashioned, and Buttermilk. My favorite was the Old Fashioned Sour Cream , because it is small and simple. All of the donuts at Ray's are extremely sugary. The chocolate and maple icings were too sugary for my taste. I enjoyed them, but couldn't finish a whole donut in fear of a sugar coma. The Buttermilk is heavy and reminded me of gooey butter cake. It tastes great, but again, I could only handle 3 bites. Mike struggled to eat his half of the long john. These long j

Old Towne Donuts

Image
Donuts should be available to me 24 hours each day. Is that so much to ask? Old Towne Donuts in Fenton is open 24 hours on Saturday and Sunday. So I already love them for that. I got a French Cruller and a Buttertwist . The Buttertwist, I'm told, is made with more butter in the batter. Delicious. The Cruller was perfect. Mike got an apple-raspberry jelly-filled glazed donut. The filling is not as sweet as most, which we enjoyed. If you get there at the right time, I've seen them fill the donut in front of you. Exciting! Shane scarfed his chocolate long john in seconds. Long Johns are popular choices and come in chocolate, vanilla, and carmel. Apple fritters are popular, too. The bakers informed me that on weekends, most of the donuts are baked/fried between 7-9pm. The entire selection is out, in all its glory, by 10pm. I will say they could use an interior decorator. But love is blind, right? And cold water is not the knob you'd think. You've been w

World's Fair Donuts

Image
World's Fair Donuts is important. Bottom line. On the corner of Shaw Blvd, this is a great stop along the way if you're hitting up the Missouri Botanical Gardens.  Things to enjoy at WFD: the old couple that runs it their DONUTS license plate on their car the ancient cash register fruit or chocolate-filled fried pie reasonable prices! Fried Pies:   In the video I'm eating a blueberry fried pie, which tastes to me a lot like a home-made toaster strudel. Less flaky, but same concept. If this was hot, it'd be perfect. I'm kind of a temperature snob about pie.  The biggest complaint against WFD I've heard and experienced is freshness. While the donuts do seem to be made fresh every day, if you get there towards closing time, you'll want a glass of milk. So if you want these donuts in their prime, go early. On the plus side, they have pretty decent hours. I suggest pulling an all nighter and going at 4:30ish. Hours: Mon-Fri 4 a

Federhofer's Bakery

Image
Today the donut craving hit around noon. Uh oh. On a Saturday, that means most donut shops are closing about now.  So my co-donut-eater, Mike, and I ran out the door.  We tried a shop I'd been wanting to blog about, but this unnamed donut shop was closing. Figures. So we almost settled for Kabobs, the logical second choice. But wait! Federhofer's! Federhofer's has sentimental value for me, because this is the bakery of my childhood. We came here when we needed bread, donuts, or sheet cakes. Today I got a chocolate long john, vanilla custard filled, and twisted danish dough cruller. I highly recommend anything with Federhofer's chocolate icing. French crullers are also excellent and I would've gotten one if I'd woken up earlier. My fault, no excuses. Seriously, though, if you like chocolate, this icing is top of the line. What I love about Federhofer's is that I don't feel terrible about myself after eating these donuts. The
